Night of Records in New England
Spirit of Massachusetts Trot and Clara Barton Distaff Pace Recap
by USTA Youth Delegate Colin Boyle
On July 28, I attended the Spirit of Massachusetts Trot and Clara Barton Distaff Pace at Plainridge Park Casino and Racetrack.
What a night it was! I witnessed two track records broken!
First was Shartin N’s all-age track record of 1.49.1. in the Clara Barton Distaff Pace. She broke two track records by achieving this speed. It was amazing to see in person.
The fact that I know one of her connections, Heather Vitale, and was invited to join in the winner’s circle was a dream come true for me. Heather is very supportive of harness racing and youth participation in the sport. She was very excited about our mission as USTA Youth Delegates.
The Spirit of Massachusetts Trot was won by Guardian Angel AS, at 1.51.3. He set a track record, as well, for aged trotting horses. He came extremely close to the all-time track record of 1.51.2 set by JL Cruze in 2017. The other trifecta horses; The Veteran finished second with Yannick Gingras in the bike; and David Miller drove Weslynn Dancer to a third-place finish. They were all breathtaking to see.
I also had a wonderful time at the barn and stable with Tim Bojarski, a contributor for Hoof Beats magazine and the Harness Racing Horsemen’s Association of New England, who knew everyone and introduced me to so many amazing and talented people. They made the race very special for me.
It was one of the best days of my life! I am grateful for all of the support that the harness racing community showed me during this exciting, record-breaking event.
